What is the solidary health project?
A group of volunteers and partners came together to support families living in the riverside region of the Pacajá River. This region is in the municipality of Portel, Archipelago of Marajó, in Pará. The meeting takes place once a year, normally in July, under the name of Projeto Saúde Solidária (Solidary Health Project).
In July 2022, the project celebrated the 10th anniversary of this union for the well-being of the riverside community of Rio Pacajá. This year, it also had the partnership of Redda+ and the Instituto Ribeirinho da Amazônia (IRAMA). In addition to them, other partners were part of the actions, offering labor to bring more health to the riverside people.
How does it work?
The event takes place once a year, but those involved work on it throughout the year. For the project to get off the ground, there is a great organization behind it, raising funds and collecting donations. The donations are for toys, personal hygiene products and medicines.
Volunteers also participate in this stage of organization, and help to organize events such as lunches, bazaars and raffles. In practice, the project offers riverside residents medical and dental consultations, including the delivery of prescribed medicines. There is still application of vaccines, pap smears and dental care. To complete, when an emergency is identified, the patient is referred to the Hospital de Portel.
Finally, the project offers guidance on social programs, in addition to lecturing on preventive care. Everything is thought so that the riverside people can access medical care, but also understand what they can do to prevent diseases.
Who is served by the action?
The Solidarity Health Project serves riverside men, women and children. The communities around the Pacajá River receive the project’s attention during the month of July. In addition to medical and dental care, there is educational interaction, with proposals, for example, on how to use nature sustainably.
In general, the more volunteers and partnerships involved, the more possibilities for actions to be developed. These communities can be guided on issues of oral hygiene, for example, to the creation of jewelry with natural resources. In the July 2022 edition, riverside residents also received school kits and toys.
What are the positive impacts of the solidary health project?
