Arbor Day – 5 Reasons to Celebrate it

Arbor day is a day of observance in which everyone is invited to plant a tree. It is world-widely celebrated and, here in Brazil, it is celebrated on September 21st. Besides that, it is also a day to remember how important trees are in not only in nature but also in our lives. They are responsible for so many things, such as helping capture the CO2 from the atmosphere, working as a cooling system in many cities and so much more.

And that is also why many companies invest in actions that can collaborate with reforestation in forests and even planting seedlings in cities.

Arbor Day was first thought of in 1872 and, since then, it has been remembered by countries. Countries decide the best date for the celebration, usually related to the climate of the region. In this way, planting actions can be carried out with a greater probability of succeeding.

For Redda+ every day is tree day because its restoration projects in the Amazon understand the importance of these living beings. These are comprehensive projects that study degraded areas in depth and apply sustainable solutions. In this post, you will learn more details about Arbor Day and the reasons not to let this date go blank.

When is Arbor Day celebrated?

Here in Brazil, where Redda+ is located, Arbor Day is celebrated on September 21st, the eve of the beginning of spring in the South Hemisphere, which starts on September 22 or September 23. Some countries in the northern hemisphere celebrate Arbor Day on April 21, also the eve of spring.

In general, the date in commemoration of the tree is chosen by the countries. In Germany, for example, it is April 25th, while in Tanzania is April 1st. And in Australia, we have an array of dates, such as National Schools Tree Day is held on the last Friday of July for schools, and National Tree Day is on the last Sunday in July throughout the country.

The important thing is that everyone chose a special day to remember the importance of trees.

In Brazil, there is also the Annual Festival of Trees, which also focuses on trees. Awareness of the importance of trees for the balance of life on the planet is also on the agenda of this party. It takes place in the last week of March, in the northern and northeastern states of Brazil, due to the rainy season.

In 2022, the Annual Tree Festival celebrated the native species of Ceará. The states involved with the festival are Ceará, Acre, Amazonas, Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe and Bahia.

How important is Arbor Day?

Arbor Day is important to make people and companies aware of the preservation of trees and forests. Check out 5 reasons to celebrate Arbor Day and do everything possible to help the conservation and preservation of the environment.

Enrich biodiversity

Trees collaborate to maintain biodiversity. Through them, there is the preservation of fauna and flora. Some offer food, others distribute their seeds with the help of wind and animals. In addition, trees give stability to the soil and are essential for the survival of small living beings.

Generate income for traditional peoples

In forests, trees are also important for traditional peoples. They are essential to provide a pleasant quality of life and provide food. In addition, they are also important natural resources for income generation for traditional communities. It is important to show that they provide food and income, but must be respected to maintain conservation and preservation.

Redda+ is concerned with these details, to show that it is possible to balance this relationship.

Reduce pollution

Trees in cities are important to reduce the negative impact caused by pollution. But even far from cities, trees help to deal with the impact of excess greenhouse gas emissions.

Therefore, it is possible to say that trees help to stop solar heating. The reduction happens because of the natural process of photosynthesis of trees, they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.

Improve the thermal sensation

In cities, trees improve the thermal sensation, vegetation helps to alleviate the intensity of solar radiation. Thus, solar heating is reduced and the temperature is balanced.

In forests, the same happens and, to top it off, trees help with climate issues. The life cycle of trees helps with air humidity and balances climate behavior, which has an impact on a global level.

Prevent erosion

Trees are important for holding the ground. The roots are fixed in the land and prevent the soil from being washed away by rain, for example. It is a way to prevent landslides and soil erosion. Some cities even suffer from landslides precisely because of the high level of deforestation. You can’t ignore how important trees are to everyone.

Arbor Day History

The tree celebration began on April 10, 1872, when Julius Sterling Morton decided to plant trees. The event drew attention because he planted a large amount, at once, in the state of Nebraska, in the United States.

Morton was a journalist and secretary of agriculture in the United States in 1893. He was very involved with issues of conservation and tree planting, including encouraging the creation of national forest reserves.

In 1971, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) officially created World Arbor Day. In the northern hemisphere, the celebration takes place on March 21, the first day of spring. In the southern hemisphere, Arbor Day is on September 21, before the beginning of spring. Countries are free to choose the celebration date.

Support is important not only for planting trees but also for collaborating with surrounding communities. This is because Redda+ develops projects based on the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this way, it is possible to support the traditional peoples of the Amazon in relation to sustainable growth and development.

All Redda+ projects are articulated in economic, cultural, social and environmental needs. It is a way of reaffirming how much nature and society can and must live together in balance and respect. In addition to this care, Redda+ collaborates to offset greenhouse gas emissions.

Anyway, by supporting Redda+ you do good for nature, for society and for yourself. In addition to helping to reduce impacts due to climate change. Click here to learn more about Redda+ projects.
